NIKKEI YOUTH CULTURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM Spend this Summer learning in Japan, July 3 to August 2, 2008 (Kobe, Japan) The Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California is launching a new program, the Nikkei Youth Cultural Heritage Program, in cooperation with the Kobe YMCA Language Program (Hyogo Prefecture, Japan), is designed for participants to gain a better understanding of their cultural heritage and discover Japan in a unique and exciting way. This program will allow participants to immerse themselves in Japanese culture through Japanese language and writing classes, attend introductory classes in traditional Japanese art forms, late afternoon and Saturday excursions exploring different parts of the Kansai region, all while having the opportunity to use and practice their Japanese language skills on a daily basis with their homestay family. This program is open to students at any level of the Japanese language, even those with little or no experience. Applicants must be 18 years of age and older and have completed a minimum of one year of college studies. The 2008 program will be limited to six participants, who will be chosen based on their application, essay and interview. Participants selected to the 2008 program must be able to attend all pre-trip workshops in preparation for their one-month stay in Japan. Applications are due on Friday, March 28, 2008 by 5:00 p.m. PROGRAM COST AND DETAILS The standard tuition for the Kobe YMCA Summer Language Program is $3,795.00.
The JCCCNC will subsidize $1,805.00 of the tuition for each participant (maximum of six in 2008). The actual tuition cost for the participant is $1,990.00* *Partial scholarships available Included in the tuition: - Summer Intensive Language Class (three hours per day for four weeks) - Afternoon Writing Class (one hour class, two days a week) - Preparatory Workshops at the JCCCNC Prior to Trip to Japan - Text and Class Materials - Hotel Stay for Two Nights (one night before and after the program) - Homestay Fee (includes breakfast and dinner daily) - Volunteer Opportunity at Nagata Kodomo Home (orphanage) - Welcome Meeting - Airport Pick-up From Kansai International Airport (KIX) - Kyoto Guided Tour and Transportation (does not include lunch) - Nara Guided Tour and Transportation (does not include lunch) - Traditional Cultural Art Classes - May include ikebana (flower arranging), karate and shodo (calligraphy) Other costs not included are air travel to/from Japan, domestic transportation in Japan and personal spending. SCHOLARSHIPS In addition to the JCCCNC reduced program rate, up to four $500.00 scholarships for the Nikkei Youth Cultural Heritage Program will be offered for selected individuals based on financial need.
